Woof Meow Show

A little shameless self promotion:

Over Thanksgiving break, I had the privilege of meeting Don Hanson and Kate Dutra at Green Acres Kennel in Bangor, Maine. I've been a fan of their radio show for quite some time and was flattered when they asked if I'd like to participate in their radio show.

We started talking, and ended up taking a deep-dive on the rescue industry. As a result, we ended up recording enough material for two full episodes, the first of which airs tomorrow night on The Voice of Maine radio stations (WVOM-103.9FM-Bangor, WVOM-1450AM-Rockland & WVQM 101.3FM-Augusta)

The podcast version will be available Sunday night at 9pm on your favorite Podcasting App or Magical Podcastery Technological Appy Thing (tm).

Part 2 will air on Christmas weekend! Perfect for all your travel plans!

Thank you so much to Don and Kate for the invitation and for the conversation - we'll have to do it again because I'm quite sure we could have talked for days! If you're in Maine, these are great people who love, care about, and know dogs. Support them and listen to their show - they are really great!

Dog Trainer Emergency Kit

Today, I raided the dog's emergency kit to splint what I now suspect is a broken toe (or at the very least, a really, really badly sprained situation in the "This Little Piggy Had None" toe).

In this emergency kit was splinting equipment, tape, soft wrap, gauze, Neosporin, and un-expired peroxide.

None of these things existed in our human emergency kit.

Loyalty = Dog

Here are a few news stories and videos (2 from this week) regarding the undying loyalty of dogs.

A German Shepherd in Alaska was sent to find help after his owners house started to burn. The cops in the area could not see the smoke due to the tree line, and the GPS failed. The cop turned around per the directions from dispatch when he caught the dog in the headlights. The GSD led the police through the woods down back roads to the burning house.

A Golden Retriever stays by his deceased owner for a week. An 81 year old man with dementia left his house and in pursuit, was his faithful dog. After several days of searching, there was a sighting - but family/police could not locate the pair. When family checked by the creek, they found the dog, standing vigilant over her deceased owners body, protecting it from predators.

Is a video about a Rottweiller, and a surprising story of heartbreaking loyalty.

Another CNN Post...Dog Saves Newborn

Reported by CNN.com this morning
(CNN) -- A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said Friday.
The abandoned infant was found in a field with this dog and her newborn puppies.

The abandoned infant was found in a field with this dog and her newborn puppies.

A resident of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house.

The man went outside and found the infant lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies, Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires, told CNN.

The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, Salcedo said.

The dog had apparently carried the baby some 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were huddled, police said.

"She took it like a puppy and rescued it," Salcedo said. "The doctors told us if she hadn't done this, he would have died."

"The dog is a hero to us."

Dr. Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital in La Plata, told CNN that police showed up at the hospital at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday with the baby who doctors say was only a few hours old.

Though the infant had superficial scratches and bruises and was bleeding from his mouth, he was in good shape, Melia said.

The next morning, the child's mother was driven by a neighbor to the hospital and told authorities the 8 pound, 13 ounce infant is hers, Melia said.

The teenager was immediately given psychological treatment and was hospitalized, he said. She has said little about the incident.

The child has been transferred to a children's hospital in La Plata, 37 miles from Buenos Aires.

I love that they say "Jake isn't usually the smartest dog - but he was just smart enough on that day".

Dog Dies, Woman Safe

I just watched a video on the following article. Essentially, a woman is alive because her specially trained dog brought her the phone after the cat knocked over a candle in the house. After the woman was safe outside of the blaze, the dog went back into the house to save the cat. Both animals died in the fire.

Article

The video is much more involved than the article, but if you use IE, and want to watch it, it will pull on your heartstrings.
